Ispydork reads

I love children's novels and pop culture coffee table books. I'm a fan of fantasy novels, self help, horror books and anthologies. Here I will be blogging about my favorites and reviewing them for you and for me.

Name three absolutely awful film adaptations of books

-Maniac Magee

-Beautiful Creatures (I haven't seen the movie all the way through or read the book. But I was running out of ideas for this question and the bits I've seen of this movie are god awful)

-some of the Narnia sequels I don't know this question is hard for me

Name five absolutely great film adaptations of books.

I'm not one of those people who needs the movie to be just like the book, so if I pick a movie you hate because its not like the book you know why.

-Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets

-Girl Interrupted

-The Virgin Suicides

-Matilda

-Caroline

"Well, sweetheart," I tell her, "yes, but it hurts a lot more to keep living.”

The worst book you’ve read in the last year.

The year just started and I haven't read any bad books yet so I'm going back to last year. Choosing Feed By MT Anderson. The writing style just wasn't for me and the book was incredibly boring.

The best book you’ve read in the last year.

Let's just pretend a week hasn't passed. I keep forgetting to do this!

I've only read 3 books so far this year and the best is definitely Wintergirls. Laurie Halse Anderson is a terrific writer and I'm in love with her style of writing!

If you were stranded on a desert island which five books would you take and why?

1. Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone- This book is magical and takes you to the most amazing fictional place Hogwarts. Its not nearly as dark as some of the later books. It makes you happy as you root for Harry and the golden trio.  Being stranded on a desert island probably sucks ass. This would make it slightly better!

2. My Side Of The Mountain- About a young boy who goes to the wild and lives off the land. Maybe there be the helpful tips in there that would also work on a desert. Also a very good book!

3. Alice In Wonderland - One of my favorite whimsical trippy books that would make for a great read in the shade of the island.

4. The Virgin Suicides- Only read the beginning of this book but liked the style of writing. Was a big fan of the Sofia Coppola movie.

5. Pretty Little Liars- Been wanting to read this and whats better for an island than cheesy YA mystery set in modern day.

SPOILER ALERT!

Wintergirls review

Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson

Laurie Halse Anderson had already won my heart with the amazing novel Speak about a girl who was raped at a party and called the cops. This book is just as amazing! Lia finds out her friend and fellow winter girl was found dead in a motel room. Nobody knows why but Lia is fearing the worth. Lia is both anorexic and a cutter. Her friend Cassie was a bulimic. This would be a very triggering book for people who are still suffering from eating disorders or self harm. But the poetic nature of the writing and the likeable and yet sometimes loath able characters keep you on the edge of your seat.  Would highly recommend!

Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson

Big fan of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and so far I'm a big fan of Wintergirls as well. Its dark and depressing with beautifully poetic writing. There are quite a few triggering moments in this book so I wouldn't recommend it to someone recovering from an eating disorder or self harm. Its quite a page turner from the very beginning!
